my 5 year old girl boo was jumped on by a 5 month old bloodhound. he jumped on her the 1st time and hurt her then jumped on her about 4 more times after that until we had to get rid of him. she just shivers, twitches, and cries out in pain. she hurt her back before but it was never like this. the vet would put her on a low dose of steroids and she would be better in a week. she has never had a problem walking but when she does walk (to go pee or poop) she is in extreme pain and i have to medicate her. the vet has her on a high dose of steroids, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxers. mostly all she does is sleep but when she does get up she's in pain. she's been like this for about 10 days and i'm starting to get really worried that she's never going to recover or else she'll need surgery which i dont have the money for. will i have to put my dog to sleep if she does not recover and i cant afford the surgery?? IDK WHAT TO DO :(

Our Daschund Jessie will be 15 in October. He had 2 spine surgerys at 4 years old and has just lost all use of his left hind leg last month. Our vet said a 3rd surgery at his age is not a good idea. We carry him all around the house and outside we have a sling that we put in front of his 2 hind legs to walk him. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but it is getting more and more difficult for us to care for him. Not sure if this is his way of telling us it's time, because he has a lot of "bed sores" from dragging himself around, if we're not near him. God bless Jesse.

My dachshund is fourteen and in great health. Every night, usually pretty late, he goes out, and when he comes back in, he goes tearing madly around the house making these hilarious little barky growls and picking up random toys and socks and tossing them in the air. I say it's his high intensity interval training : )

Our male dachshund, Bonkers, just passed away yesterday and was like loosing a child.
He was just shy of his 16th birthday. I got him as a pup and raised him. He slowed
down this past year I noticed, the vet said he had a heart murmor. Their was nothing
he could do for Bonkers. So, my husband and I decided to give him more real food
like cooked brocolli, alittle meat, carrots, etc. He lost alittle weight and seemed to fill
better. A few days ago he started breathing short quick breaths and I new the time
was near. I sat up at 3 am with him the last night he was alive. I held him in my arms
and told him that he would be going to heaven soon and someday I would be there
with him again. I told him how much I loved him and cried. Daylight came and I
never went to sleep. My husband woke up to go to work and I told him that Bonkers
was not going to be with us much longer, I just knew. My husband picked Bonkers up
and gave him a warm bath and then I fed him a half of can of Alpo. After he ate
I loved and patted him and told him to go lay down. He went in our bedroom and
laid down on a thick folded blanket on the floor. I laid down in our bed, but couldn't
go to sleep. I got back up about 5 min. later and looked at Bonkers and he was gone.
My heart broke. I called my husband and he took off work and came home to bury
him. We build Bonkers a casket out of cedar wood. We wrapped him in a soft thick
blanket and put his favorite stuffed white bear in it also. We buried him under an
old large oak tree in our backyard. We plan on planting a rose tree on top of his
grave. We lost our best friend and miss him dearly.

Our dachshund, Cinnamon, will be sixteen years old next month (March 2012). She has cataracts in both eyes so she can only see shadows. She is very hard of hearing; in fact, you have to yell really loud for her to hear you. She seems very healthy otherwise...running and playing like a puppy. She has lost most of her teeth (had eighteen pulled recently) and her head is completely gray along with all four of her legs and tail. She drinks a LOT of water and has to "go" frequently. Sometimes, she seems to be lethargic and forgets where she is. We love her and will greatly miss her when her time comes, but until that time, we are enjoying her every day!

Nita, stay on top of the heart murmur. The wheezing is part of that. He may need to be on a diuretic (Lasix, not expensive). They can fill up with excess fluid that makes the heart work even harder.
