Dog Art: Dachshund Collage at it’s Finest

If you like dog art, you would appreciate the work of Moira McLaughlin (MORE-a Mc-LOCK-lin) where she just completed a Longhaired Dachshund Calendar collage.  (No spoilers here, just visit her site to see her final copy.)

McLaughlin started Dog Art Today when she:

began making [her] own art and noticed that many of the greats in art history chose dogs as their subjects. Some of [her] favorite contemporary artists do too.

Some of my favorite contemporary dog artists include Nancy Schutt and Evelyn Morris Hecht both whom I cherish their work dearly.

It’s always fun to find gems where true expression comes in the love of the dog — especially dachshunds — and artists which can elaborate that expression.  McLaughlin is no exception.

FURminator Inc. is Deshedding it Competition

An interesting read in the Wall Street Journal popped up in my reader today.  FURminator Inc. has been deshedding its competition by filing more than 20 patent lawsuits for knockoff products.

Consider what A ‘Comb on a Stick’ Creates:

The team also sued PetVac Inc., a Seattle company that makes a device that sucks up pet hair in addition to combing it out. (FURminator recently released its own fur sucker.) A Munchkin spokeswoman declined to comment. PetEdge didn’t return calls requesting comment. A federal judge last year issued a ruling against PetVac, and PetVac’s lawyer said the company decided to stop fighting FURminator because of mounting expenses.

I’ve often thought of trying the FURminator, but even on [[ebay:furminator|eBay]], it is a little pricy.  But apparently it is well worth the price according to some Dachshund owners.  According to Jason O’Hara whom opened a DIY dog salon, the FURminator was his top choice for grooming tools.

He started using the FURminator on his dog, Turkey, a suspected
long-haired Chihuahua-dachshund mix. “He totally tolerated it,” Mr.
OHara says.

Most of the trouble with grooming our long-haired dogs is that they just don’t tolerate the brushing and combing so I need to be selective on which tools they won’t run away from.  The metal grooming comb I bought a few months back works wonders on Molly, but Chloe fears it and runs away.  Perhaps it is time to try the FURminator to see how it works?

Microchip Your Dachshund if you want him back

This story brought a tears to my eyes and it is well worth watching the video and reading the article.

Dachshund lost on Fla. vacation reunited with family in Missouri | wcsh6.com

Addison, the 7-year-old Dachshund was warmly embraced by her owner 14-year-old Abby Mason. Abby hadn’t seen the dog since June.

Addison was picked up as stray in Tampa, Florida after getting away from relatives she was visiting there.
Hillsborough County Animal Services identified the animal through her microchip.

The important thing as a Dachshund owner is to make sure that your pet is micro chipped and you register your chip so that your pet can find his way home to you.  When lost dogs are brought into a shelter or to a Vet’s office, a quick scan of the will quickly identify the owner.

All three of our Dachshunds have chips and are registered.  Your Vet can insert the microchip for you if your dog doesn’t have the device.  As you can see it is priceless.

Classic Hot Dog Costume for Your Dachshund

I’ve bought some nice sweaters and clothes for Odie and the girls, but never dressed them up in costumes for Halloween before.  The classic costume designed specifically for the Dacshund is the Hot Dog bun.  Somehow it just looks too funny on these long and short dogs.

I’ve seen other dogs wearing the bun, but it just doesn’t look right.  Usually when other dogs sport the bun, their legs are too long or the bun is too large making the dog look like an out of place hot dog.  I guess I’d get the same look if I wore a Superman costume.

The Wiener costume attaches with Velcro so it stays put on your Dachshund even when it runs to the door to greet the trick-or-treaters. My guess is that once the kiddies see your dog wearing it, they will get an unsweetened treat out of it.

Anyway, I’ve been lucky buying our dog clothes online at [[ebay:hot dog pet costume|eBay]] but you need to make sure that your bid doesn’t exceed the price you can find at ohmydogsupplies.com.

Regardless, you can click here to find the best price with excellent customer service.  You may pay a little more, but sometimes it is worth it especially if you want to get your costume by Halloween.

Using a Dog Comb to Groom Your Long Haired Dog

I have to admit that over the years, I’ve never used a comb for grooming our long haired Dachshund with perhaps the exception of using a plastic comb I used personally from myself.   Perhaps with the poor grooming results from my black comb, I never gave it a second thought to using combs as part of our daily arsenal of grooming tools.

But Molly was having a terrible time with knots and the deshedding tools were just not keeping up with her growing dreadlocks between her legs and behind her ears.

With a little research, I found a site that gave great detail on how to groom a longhaired dachshund that was insightfully written by a professional groomer.  Her main trick was to use a stripper knife and I was all set to find one and went to our local PetSmart to see if they carried one.

It wasn’t too busy and I didn’t bring the dogs into the store, so I had some time to search for the knife.  I couldn’t find it and of course the assistant manager walked by to see if was finding everything.  My answer was “no” which set her off on a mission to find one.

“I know that we used to carry them, but we’re either out of stock or the product was discontinued.”

She sent me to the groomer who wasn’t too busy on a Wednesday afternoon with a sole Poodle/customer being worked on.

The groomer explained to me that stripper knives have a tendency to slice open dogs which is bad for business and a liability, thus restricted from being used in their shop. This sort of explains why stripper knifes are not on the shelf for resale.

She continued by asking about my three Dachshunds and suggested using a metal grooming comb and a Top Paw dematting comb.

The dematting comb works great for cutting out knots, but you need to be careful since the sharp blades do cut deep.  I’ve cut my thumb more that once working through Chloe’s knots, and I dare not use it on Molly since she wiggles too much when working on her knots.

I opted for the small metal comb that really does wonders at grooming both Molly and Chloe.  (Apparently this comb is exclusive PetSmart, but I’ve seen it cheaper on eBay.)

I noticed that both dogs do not fear the comb like the brush.  With the anxiety removed, I can spend more time on their coats keeping them nice and groomed.  Knots and tangles come out easier than with a brush.

Are Oreck Vacuums Good for Pet Hair?

I hate buying vacuums.  We simply don’t know how well they will work until we get home and try it out on our carpet.  But I’d like to save you some time and perhaps some frustration, if you need to buy a vacuum that will clean up the pet hair from your shedding dog.

I think I’ve tried just about every major vacuum brand over the past 25 years and basically it has come down to two vacuums that we use for cleaning our carpet.  The first is the Oreck and the second is the Dyson.  Both are rather expensive but if you look at the long-term costs and the effectiveness of how well they clean your carpet, you will find that they are less expensive than a cheaper brands which will last only a few years.

You have to understand as a dog owner, that is with three dachshunds, we vacuum just about every other day to have a clean house that is free of dog hair and pet dander.  Perhaps we vacuum more often than normal, but we do that to counteract our allergies.

You may only have to vacuum once a week or about 50 times per year. But this is a lot of wear and tear on your vacuum so you want to get the most out of it and don’t want your vacuum to break down after a few years.

The Oreck is really good at picking up dog hair.  I’m often surprised how well it does because it is so lightweight and easy to use especially on the stairs where Chloe sleeps during the day to look outside the windows.  I usually start at the top of the stairs and vacuum each step in both directions.  A quick pass to the left, rotate the vacuum 180°, and a quick pass to the right.  I always work one or two steps above where I stand so that I don’t lose balance and tumble down the stairs.  Also, I plug the vacuum in the outlet upstairs so I don’t have to worry about the power cord.

The Oreck has powerful suction that cleans just about any mess but its low-profile makes it difficult to push across your carpet.  We don’t have shag — I would call it more of a low pile carpet — but even then it’s difficult to push.  If you believe those ads on TV, the Oreck was designed for hotel use where the type of carpet most hotels have is low pile.  So I can imagine how easy it would be to push the Oreck across a smoother surface.

The extra large vacuum bag is self-sealing so you don’t have to know how to change a vacuum bag.  All you have to do is unzip the plastic/rubber outer lining and yank that bag off.  The bag opening closes automatically so very little if any dust escapes.

So why should you buy an Oreck?

There are three reasons why I recommend this brand for pet hair.

  • Powerful suction with motorized brush removes pet hair and dander.
  • Lightweight and easy to use on stairs.  This is important if your dog sleeps on the stairs.
  • Long-lasting, high quality product. Our Oreck XL is still going strong after five years.

You may want to check with your local Oreck Dealer to see if he will let you try out vacuum in your home.  That is the only way to determine if it will work out for you.  The only thing I really don’t like about it is that is difficult to push on our carpet so my wife doesn’t like to use the Oreck and prefers the easier pushing Dyson with the larger wheels.  But from our experience — mostly mine because I use the Oreck the most — is that the Oreck is really good at cleaning up pet hair.  Our off white carpets are restored to fluffy freshness after vacuuming with the XL.

How to Stop a Dachshund Puppy From Peeing in the House

It’s been a while since Molly was a puppy so I’m going from ancient memory and recalling that she was quite easy to house train by following four simple rules.  However, I did benefit from training Chloe and then Odie within a few years of each other, so our third Dachshund was easier.  But it could be that I’m only remembering the pleasant training and forgetting all those stubborn times with her.

Yet, I’m sure that if you follow these simple steps, your puppy will learn to potty outside instead of inside the house. Just remember to:

  • take your puppy outside after it eats
  • take your puppy outside to potty after it wakes
  • take your puppy outside before and after you play with it
  • take your puppy outside the potty before it goes to bed

Control your dog’s eating and drinking habits

The first step is really to restrict your puppy from eating and drinking after certain hours.  Because what happens is that what goes in comes out.  It’s common sense that your puppy wants to eliminate waste and their bladder is really small that it can only hold things for a few hours.

We pretty much feed our dogs when we got home from work.  Six P.M was and is still is dinner time for them.  Keeping a strict schedule really helps the structure and before long your puppy will get in the habit of peeing outside. Being consistent this way, all three of our dogs now eat dinner and then head to the door and go outside.

I would recommend with a puppy that you pick them up take him over to the door open the door and can take them outside and say go potty.  Because what will usually happen if you don’t pick him up is that he will sometimes have an accident inside.  Once he gets old enough, perhaps 12 to 16 weeks old, they will become very natural for him just to run over to the door and go outside by himself.

Sleeping schedule

Regardless if you’d crate train your dog or if you simply allow it to sleep on the bed — hopefully not yours — you want to restrict access to food and water.  It will take an hour or two for them to eliminate again, so after you feed them you want to remove the water bowl and refrain from giving them any treats.  Prior to bed time, you want to take your puppy outside once again to give him a chance to grow potty.  You may have to wait awhile for him to go to let them sniff around to find the right spot to go.  Again, you’ll need to carry him outside until he is old enough to understand the structure.

Your puppy may potty during the night so as best to crate train him or put him in an enclosed area so that he doesn’t go and soil the carpet.  Puppy pads work wonders during the first month of the training process.  So you only need to buy about one bag that will last a month.

We kept Chloe, Odie and Molly in the kitchen during the day and at night.  The puppy pads help them to eliminate during the day if they needed to go, but I was able to come home during lunchtime to take them out to potty, give them a little treat, and of course play with them, so they weren’t needed as much as I thought they would.

Training your puppy to pee outside is quite simple by understanding that your puppy needs to pee when it wakes up after it eats and after it plays.  Even though you may be having problems right now with your puppy going inside the house, start first with a strict schedule and remember to take him out many times during the day.  Use a key training word like “go potty” so that he will understand the interaction of you taking him outside and the act of going potty.  These simple steps I’ve used on my three dachshunds to stop them from peeing in the house.

How to save $5 on Beggin Strips

We were out shopping this morning and made a quick stop into Target to pick up a few things that we ran out of, you know, the things you don’t want to buy in bulk at Costco but want to a least save a few dollars here and there if you bought them at the grocery store.

Target has some really good prices especially on dog food and dog treats.  We pretty much go there as much as possible to get the Beggin strips for our three pups.  A 25oz bag usually runs under $10 making one of the cheapest places to buy the treats.

What was nice to find out was that Target is having a buy 2 begging strips and receive a $5 gift card that you can use on your next purchase.  I didn’t see how long the offer was good for, but it is worth your while to get some Beggin Strips if your dogs like those treats as much as our dogs do.  I believe this deal is better than the 40oz closeout sale we got last month

Blue Buffalo Health Bars Review

Our dogs love Blue Buffalo dog food and there is no exception to their Health Bar line of dog treats.  When we were out of some treats, they decided that they wanted to try out the bars.  So I was feeling a little generous and popped into our local PetCo and picked up a bag.

The one pound bag was on sale for $10, but it turns out you can buy one here for a lot less (around $8/bag) especially when you don’t have to pay for shipping. But sometimes I like to get a bag and let our dogs try them out before buying in bulk to get a discount.

The health bars are 2 inches square making it a good size for large to medium sized dogs. For small dogs like Dachshunds, you want to break the biscuits in half for a more appropriate portion.  I break the health bars into thirds giving one to each of my dogs.

The dog biscuits are made out of natural ingredients like oatmeal, barley, ground oats, chicken meal, chicken liver, etc.   No meat by products, but simply healthy and delicious.

Pros

  • No by products
  • No corn, wheat or soy
  • Fortified with Omega 3 and antioxidants
  • No artificial preservatives, colors or flavors

Cons

  • The cost per bag is too high

I’m sure that your dog would like the health bar, but only two of our three dogs like them.  Chloe will eat them but she’s a little picky about her food so it may take another bag or flavor for her to really enjoy them.  I know my dogs love Beggin Strips, but it worth the price to keep them healthy as possible.

3 Doxies Recommend Dog Owner to get Beggin Strips Coupons

Our Dachshunds were mopping around that past few days looking for a handout of their favorite dog treat “Beggin Strips.”  Of course we ran out and they didn’t get treats until we went shopping at Ralphs. We somehow skipped Ralphs a week earlier by going to Sprouts Farmer’s Market to save on the lower prices found on their veggies. But Sprouts doesn’t carry Beggin Strips — or any dog treats that I can think of – so we have to resort to larger grocers or PetSmart to pick up a bag or two.

However, I was somewhat pissed off at the price Ralphs was charging for the 25oz bag and walked out and went a few stores down to the Thousand Oaks Petco only to find that the normal lower price was higher that what Ralphs was charging.

We ended up getting a bag at Ralphs that made our dogs very happy when they saw, or heard the familiar bag of treats we brought in from our car.

We pretty much try to pick up Beggin Strips when they are on sale but for some reason we keep forgetting to visit Target’s pet section since they carry the treats discounted deep for us dog owners who have more than one dog.   Apparently Target was having a closeout on 40oz bags this week so we bought a few that should last us a few months.  Even with the large bag lasting longer, the zip-lock seal keeps the treats from drying out.

Now that we have a surplus of treats, the next thing to do is to start collecting some [[ebay:Beggin Strip Coupons]] at eBay for the next round of purchases.  From what I can tell, the Beggin Strip prices are on the rise and saving a few dollars here and there really helps the bottom line for our pocket book.

The Best Dog Poop Bag Dispenser

Every morning I can tell that the neighborhood dogs were busy the night before and their owners neglected to pick up after their mess.  Of course having three Dachshunds, I’m guilty by default and get that dirty look from neighbors pointing out that large mound on their lawn.  Even though I tell them that I have miniatures and they take mini poops, they think they caught the culprit red handed since I’m returning to the scene of the crime.

I’ve have to admit that – even though I use dog waste bags – trying to clean up after Odie is difficult enough to do and nearly impossible at night if I forgot a flashlight.   I kind of have to feel around hoping that I don’t puncture the bag and get the mess all over me.

Clever design of the dog poop bag dispenser uses LR41 batteries. (Photo: 3doxies/Howard Young.)

But I did find a solution to forgetting my flashlight and that is to have an all-in-one poop bag dispenser that is a flashlight.  The Clean Go Lighted Waste Bag Holder is a flashlight that you insert your poop bags into.  The clever design eliminates the AA-sized batteries and uses 3 –LR41 button cell calculator batteries. Because these batteries are so small, you can insert poop bags where you would normally expect the batteries to go.  This makes it the best dog poop bag dispenser on the market.

The top cap screws off to expose the battery compartment.  You also twist the cap to turn the LED off and on, so you need to keep twisting until the top pops off.  I found that this was a little difficult since I was worried that if I applied too much pressure, I thought it was going to break the switch. The open battery compartment holds the LR41 batteries.  You just align them all the same way with the correct polarity.  There’s a big +/- sign so you can’t get this wrong.  After the batteries are installed, push the cap back and then turn the flashlight on with a slight twist.

The Poop Snoop comes with instructions on the outside of the pacakge. (Photo: 3doxies/Howard Young.)

The bottom of the dispenser unscrews so you can load the poop bags into it.  The instruction says that you can insert a roll of twenty Clean Go Bags, but I used some off brand that I found on eBay really cheap.  The roll was too large so I had to pull off about 5 of them to get the roll to fit.  Once I got the roll down to size, I simply took one of the ends and threaded it through the dog bone shaped opening.

The dog poop dispenser has a quick release clip where you can attach it to a leash or belt loop.   I prefer clipping it to the leash since I won’t forget to take some bags along when our dogs for a walk.   Plus I don’t have to fiddle with getting the dispenser off my belt loop while my dog does his business.

I haven’t found this product in the stores, so either it is new or just isn’t carried in our area.  I bought mine at [[ebay: lighted dog waste bag holder|eBay for about $6 plus shipping]].  Of course, if you find one for a better price, please share your find in the comments below:

Dachshund Picture Frame

I’m always looking for strange and unusual Dachshund things to clutter up my home and of course I’m always in need of another picture frame to display my prized dogs.  It’s not like I get to see them every day, but at work I start missing them and I know they’re getting into mischief like all dogs do.

So I simply like to pick from one of my hundreds — if not thousands — of favorite photos I shot of them over the years and print it out to the correct picture frame size on my HP OfficeJet 6500.  (Which, by the way is a very good printer for photos.)  A little trimming and you get something like in the photo above.

Five minutes of work and I get to take my dog to work and proudly show off on of the pack.

This particular frame you can get at Amazon (about $17 w/ shipping) or the Pet Source (on sale for $15) but I’ll shop around some more and most likely get one on eBay.

Long Haired Dachshund

My wife always wanted to get a long-haired red Dachshund and of course we finally got Molly after searching many years for the perfect puppy. I kept going back to the pet store and there she was waiting for us. Finally after about the third trip to the store, she came home with us.

With her beautiful soft baby fine red hair, I knew right away that she was going to be a handful. The extra grooming required for second long-haired dog was not the issue, but her sweet disposition in the pet store was simply a mask she put on to trick us in bringing her home.

Molly decided that she was going to become the alpha dog in the house. That did not suit Odie very well and they did like the fight every so often just to see who was boss. But when Odie injured his back and had surgery she became top dog to rule the roost.

But like Chloe she does have the trait of the quieter and gentle side that is common in most long-haired dachshunds. I can’t say for certain that all long haired will have a gentle personality, but with the two that I own and from the other long hairs that I know, they’re more docile than the short-haired variety.

To get that long hair, it seems like they were bred with some other type of dog like an Irish setter or cocker spaniel. The former does not seem to likely due to the size difference.

However, geneticists have found the underlying event and gene that causes short legs in dogs — especially the Dachshund — perhaps they’ll figure out the common trait and source of their long hair coat.

Regardless, their multi-colored coats ranging from the predominate black and tan (like Chloe), solid red (sort of like Molly), cream and dappled make an interesting feature covering their elongated short bodies.

Even though both Molly and Chloe take longer to groom and require frequent baths, they are well worth the extra trouble. Both enjoy the additional attention with a daily brushing to keep knots from matting up their hair. Usually this ends with playing ball which makes it even more enjoyable for both of them.

About – Your Dachshund Site Host

Hi, my name is Howard Young and welcome to my site about dogs and in particular Dachshunds. In case you haven’t figured out, I own three Dachshunds, or should I say they own me. While I love all dogs, these wiener dogs sort have become my passion in the canine industry because they are very challenging yet easy to live with.  (If you want to know a little more about them, you may want to read Dachshund Facts first.)

My dogs help me write the content on this site and they happily give their opinion on the products they review and I do the translating and typing for them.  Now if I could teach them to type, that would be impressive, wouldn’t it?

But  I’m actually psychic and can read the thoughts of dogs: “food please, potty please, play please, nap please, great toy, this sweater sucks, walk please, sleep…”  I’m joking of course, but after a while you can read the expression on your dog’s face and understand what they want and if they are happy or not.

This vital feedback hopefully creates insight and a valid review that I hope you enjoy as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

All the best,

Chloe, Odie, Molly and Howard

Dachshund Breed Info

About the Dachshund

Hi and welcome to 3doxies.com! If you were looking for information about the dachshund,  you’ve come to the right place. First off, I’m a proud owner (or do they own me) of three miniature dachshunds, Chloe, Odie and Molly. So I do know a little about them.

Tea Cup Dachshund

There are a lot of tea cup breeds which puppy mills are trying to sell you. There really isn’t anything officially recognized as a tea cup dashound, so basically any extra money that you are going to spend on that puppy is due to buying the runt of the litter. So you might as well look for a miniature and save lots of money.

Miniature Dachshund

Miniature dachshunds are very popular. They typically weigh in between 10 to 15 lbs. Both Chloe and Molly are one the heavy side and above their ideal weight. The girls are very funny and get upset when we call them fat. Perhaps they are very smart or just know that when we call them fat, they know their cookie ration is going to be cut in half. Odie stays very trim around 13 lbs.

Standard Dachshund

The standard is the normal size of the breed. The dog usually weighs in greater than 15 lbs and can get as large as 30 lbs. Standard puppies are hard to locate since the trend is for small sized dogs. Regardless of size they have the same temperament.

Different colors and hair styles

Dachshunds have beautiful hair colors and textures. Some of the more common colors are red or black and red. But you can find cream colored and multi-colored dogs. Multi-colored dachshunds are known as Dapples. The Piebald Dachshund usually has a white body mixed with red spots or patches.

The Short haired or smooth dachshund has very short hair. They require very little grooming other than a bath once in a while. Odie is a short haired miniature dotson and loves being brushed with a rubber horse grooming brush. It removes his shedding hair while giving him a nice message.

Both of our girls are long haired and require constant grooming. A wire brush keeps their curls hair from tangling. Yet no matter how much we brush Molly, she knots up. This has this really soft baby-fine mane that simply tangles. We keep their hair long and trim it up so it looks nice and neat.

I’ve never seen a Wirehaired dachshund in person before, but they have a lot of hair around the muzzle. Apparently you need have them professionally groomed.

Your Best Friend for a Long Time (BFLT)

Like smaller dog breeds, dacshunds live a long time. It is not unusual for them to live well into their teens. You may want to read my post on How long do Dachshunds live to get an idea of how long your best friend will be around for.

Dachshunds and Back Problems

The elongated dachshund has a tendency have back injuries. It is important that when you pick up your dog that give him full support underneath his body. Jump up or down can cause a back injury, so you may want to train your dashund from NOT jumping on and off couches and beds. This may be very difficult for to do and a doggie step to help them get on and off the furniture may be the only solution.

If your dog is in pain, doesn’t want to move, or jump, he may have ruptured a disk. This is quite common in the dachshund and in larger breeds such as a pit bull. It is important that you seek the aid of your Vet immediately. If you wait too long your dog may become paralyzed.

Vets typically will give your pet anti-inflamitories to reduce the swelling. If that doesn’t work, he may recommend back surgery. When Odie ruptured his disc, he became paralyzed in his hind quarters. While the surgery was somewhat expensive, he recovered and has about 90% use of his back legs. Unless you knew he had an operation, you probably could not tell the difference.

Hard to Clean Dachshund Stains

Dachshunds are stubborn dogs. Especially when it comes to potty training. Molly still has her occasional “accident” when she forgets to go #2 in the morning. When she was first learning, every night she would wander upstairs and find that special spot in the guest bedroom and leave #1 or #2.

Needless to say, we have a nice urine stains in the room making it somewhat embarrassing to have guests stay in that room.

I just got a link request from PetStainRemoval where they are offering a free sample of their urine removal solution they want you to try. You apply it to the spot and 1 to 8 hrs it’s gone! With three Dashunds, I’m sure I’ll need the gallon solution to clean up that guest room.
