Is Royal Canin a Good Dog Food?

This blog seems to be getting lots of questions that need answering and while I have some time this summer I would like to answer “is Royal Canin a Good Dog Food?” I have to admit that of the dry foods that our three Dachshunds have eaten over their life, Royal Canin is one of their favorites. So in this Royal Canin dog food review, I’ll attempt to answer they very question.
I first found the food in El Rancho Market in Solvang, CA, a small grocery store we like to visit on the way home from a shopping trip in the Scandinavian town. I always like to pick up a couple of squeaky toys after we’re away for the day to bring home for the dogs and of course, this leads me to the dog food isle. El Rancho didn’t have any toys worth buying but they did have Royal Canin Dachshund 28 Formula in a 3 lb bag that had a cute picture of a Doxie on it.
For about $10 it was worth a try and it turned out that all three dogs loved when we got home. The bag lasted about 2 months since we only used it to supplement their diet for snacks and in between meals. The problem with the brand at the time when it was first introduced was that it was hard to find. We really couldn’t justify the 90 mile drive to Solvang just to pick up some food every couple months even if the Chumash Casino was just down the street to the market.
But, whenever we’re in the area, we still pick up a bag or two for our dogs. Of course now you can pick up a ten pound bag at Amazon that qualifies for free shipping, but back then you couldn’t buy Royal Canin at Amazon.
So, is Royal Canin a Good Dog Food? The short answer is yes. Here’s why:
Royal Canin does not add chicken or poultry by-product meals. Just pure meat and they toss out the necks, feet, intestines and all the other nasty parts that you or I wouldn’t eat. These parts are found in low quality dog foods, but not in Royal Canin.
No preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxquin and propylene glycol are added. These preservatives have been associated with possible toxic side effects. No artificial colors or flavors are added to make get your dog to like the food.
These two qualities in Royal Canin in my opinion make it a great dog food that is worth the higher price even if you have to drive a distance to buy it. But always look for ways to save money on this food by using Royal Canin dog food coupons or taking advantage of free shipping that Amazon offers, otherwise it can become very expensive especially if you have three dogs like me.
