What are the Best Dog Food Containers?

By Mar 31, 2011

Even though we cook fresh food for our Dachshunds, we keep a backup supply of dry food in case of emergencies. You never know when the Big One will hit California and being prepared is always the best especially when you have pets. Dry food stores really well for months at end and it usually doesn’t go to waste if we give them bits here and there for treats.

The main problem that we have is with ants. Somehow dry dog food is an ant magnet. They love the stuff more than our Doxies and once they find the bag we basically have to toss it into the trash. Keep in mind that it’s only a 5 lb bag, but we certainly hate to throw it away.

While we had a cat (“Ink Spot” – oh how we miss the poor kitty :( ), his food was stored in a Tupperware cereal storage container. It wasn’t completely airtight but it prevented an ant attack of his expensive high-protein fiber diet food which eliminated his constant hairball problem.

His container works perfect for our three dogs although I don’t know how fresh the food remains for months at a time. Now you may be thinking that it requires a taste test – and I’m not going to do the freshness test – so I can only assume that it will last for about three months and the lot is replaced.

Besides Tupperware, there are certain brands that will store your pet food for months at a time. They are designed with the larger dog in mind. And even though you would think three Doxies would add up to a large dog, they simply don’t eat enough to justify a pet food storage container. Most have a simple lid for ease of dispensing food and are not airtight for pests and freshness.

But I did locate on Amazon the best dog food containers manufactured by Gamma2. (Of course you’re welcome to spend more money buying one at PetCo.) The Vittles Vault is made of food grade high quality impact resistant plastic. It has a screw on cap that holds in the freshness and locks out the pests. The smaller size is perfect for our emergency supply plus they come in larger sizes that can hold up to a 50 lb bag of kibble.

While the Vault version has the lid on the top, the stackable version has the opening on the side so you can reach in and get the food for your pet and stack more than one on top of each other. They tend to buckle under heavy weight, so you should try to use the food in the top container first or use them side by side.

The Vittles are made to last. The heavy duty food grade plastic is safe for your dog and won’t crack and become brittle like clear plastic containers have a tendency to do. With so many sizes, I’m sure that you will find the best pet food container for whatever type of animal you own.
